Reindeer Hair Do

Punky's reindeer do for her Christmas party!
I used my sock bun technique for the bun and followed this blog post for the reindeer. I had to put the eyes further back because I used the sock instead of the foam form. But I think it's still super cute! Punky couldn't wait to do this after I showed it to her a couple weeks ago! Also, the nose is a bit big, would have rather had a smaller puff ball, but we already had this one and I was not about to go out and buy a whole new bag of puff balls for this one project. She loves it just the same!

How To Make Plastic Headband Blanks For Dolls!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've logged in here. I miss it! So I thought I'd come back and tell you all about a newish tutorial. I say new-ish because I released it awhile back but have just added an update. This tutorial will show you how to create headband blanks that fit an 18 inch doll such as an American Girl Doll! The update I've added is instructions to make woven headbands. I show you each step of the way to weave ribbon onto a headband that you created using the tutorial. The same technique can also be used for regular girl sized headbands too! To learn more about it click here.

Wow! Today the sun is shining and it is in the 60's! I feel alive again after such a long cold winter. I was working on an order and took a break to make a blue bird, I'd had it in my head for a week or so and it just needed to come to life. This little guy is available in my shop here.

How To Curl or Kork Ribbon - Free Tutorial

Today I'll show you how to curl, often referred to as "kork", ribbon. Korking works best on 100% polyester ribbon such as Grosgrain Ribbon. Korked ribbon has many crafting uses. It can be used for hair bows (often called "korkers"), gift wrapping, or in this case it'll be used in a ribbon sculpture.

For this project I am using:
* 1/8" grosgrain ribbon by Offray
* 3/16" dowel - works best with this skinny ribbon. If using 3/8" ribbon, I like to use a 1/4" dowel. You can experiment with different sizes to achieve the curl you'd like to have.
* A couple of wood clothespins
* Baking Sheet
* Aluminum foil
* Oven

Step 1:
Preheat oven to 220 degrees F.

Step 2:
Attach the ribbon to the end of the dowel by securing with one clothespin.

Step 3:

Wind the length of ribbon down the length of the dowel or for as much length as you'd like. Be sure to keep the edges together but do not overlap. If spaces are left, the curl will be looser.

Step 4:

Secure the end of the ribbon with the remaining clothespin.

Step 5:

Place dowel onto a foil lined baking sheet and place into the preheated oven.

Step 6:

Bake for approximately 20 minutes.

Step 7:

Allow to cool on the dowel, then remove clothespins and slide or unwind the ribbon off of the dowel.

Your ribbon is now ready for your craft! This particular ribbon is used in the tutorial for the Expecting Mom and Baby Ribbon Sculpture Tutorial that will be released very very soon!

Tips:

•Since all ovens vary, test on scrap ribbon to get the right temperature and timing for your oven. A rule of thumb for lighter colored ribbon is to use the least amount of time and temperature to avoid turning the ribbon brown.

•For stiffer ribbon, spray with a fabric stiffener or spray starch after wrapped but before baking.

So after a friend of mine suggested that I make the Edward "Sparkle", I went for it :). I like him better this way :) I had thought about naming it "The Skin Of A Killer", but thought it sounded a bit harsh, I didn't want to scare anyone away! This one I modeled after the scene in the movie where Edward shows Bella what he looks like in the sun with his shirt open...

Edward Cullen and Bella Swan

Yes, I AM one of those Twilight people :). Can not get enough of the books. The movie was pretty cheesy, but I loved it too. I bought the special edition DVD and after showing my daughter the special scenes that showed you how they made the movie (so she could see it wasn't real) I let her watch it. She is now a little obssessed with MovieBella and MovieEdward (he'll never live up to the BookEdward that I've created in my mind). Anyway, as usual, I get a lot of inspiration for my work from her and she wanted an Edward and Bella ribbon sculpture. So I made them :) These are my first attempts and she loved them! They are modeled after the Forest Scene. She played with them all morning before school :) Trying to decide if I should make another set for sale on Etsy???

Snow on the last day of Spring Break!

Yuck! What a miserable week we've had weather wise for Punky's Spring break from school. Mostly cold and rainy. They did have one nice day that they got to play outside, sunshine 55 degrees, a nice spring day. This morning we woke up to this

But the Punky and Munky really enjoyed themselves this morning though. Had to dig out the snow pants and boots I'd put away first LOL!

Makes it kind of hard to think about all the spring/summer items I have made and need to photograph! I keep waiting for a nice day to get outside, I'm tired of taking boring pictures inside the house!

New! Adjustable No Slip Ribbon Headbands!!!

New in the punkynmunky etsy shop! Adustable no slip headbands! I am in love with how simple and elegant these look in the hair.

They are made from grosgrain ribbon with the ends sealed to prevent fraying. To prevent slipping out of the hair they have been treated on the inside with silicone. I sent my model here to school with one in her hair fully expecting to find it in her backpack when she came home. Nope, still in her hair!

Each one has a toggle to adjust the size of the headband to fit many different sizes! I use approximately 29" of ribbon which fits my 5year olds head as well as my big ole head!

So many different colors to choose from, this is just a sample of colors! I have more and I can even order other colors if I don't have what you want!

Goldilocks and The Three Bears

I was so excited to finaly sit down and make this ribbon sculpture! I've loved the story since I was a young girl. I really like how it turned out. I love the pink and brown color combination. The Three Bears are approximately 2.5 inches tall and Goldilocks is 3" tall. Both are on a hair clip. Wouldn't that look cute in your little Goldilocks' hair?

Shamrocks

Phew! I had an order for some ribbon Shamrocks that I was excited to fill! As I measured out all my ribbon I noticed that I would not have enough to complete the order. So I immediately ordered some more Emerald Green ribbon from one of my suppliers. I was thrilled when it arrived on Thursday, but was then promptly disappointed when I opened it up and had Apple Green Ribbon!!! Apple Green just doesn't cut it for St. Patrick's Day Shamrocks! I called the supplier and she was kind enough to send me the correct ribbon Express shipping. I was biting my nails hoping it would arrive by Saturday (which is when I had planned to ship this order). Yay! I was so excited when early in the day it arrived!!! Since I was behind schedule on this order I worked off an on throughout the day (instead of just naptime and after bedtime), letting the kids watch lots of TV so I could get it all done LOL! These were fun to make though, so it was a good time. I just finished up the last one and letting the adhesives cure overnight. I can package them up in the morning, print out my shipping label, and have it all ready to ship on Monday. This way I can enjoy my day at my parent's with the kids tomorrow!

Finally getting motivated again!

The last few months I have been very unmotivated to create due to the CPSIA. Even when we got the "stay" I just was feeling very 'blah' I guess and have just been working on simple hair bows and simple ribbon sculptures. Well today I finally got the urge to make something new! I feel so much better! It's not finished, but it's working out how I envisioned. Although it is alot more work than I anticipated. It might be a one of a kind creation! I cannot wait to share it with you all!

So I just read that the CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements and read the quote below. I've also read of people cautioning that it is only "proposed", but either way it is a step in the right direction! There is so much that needs to be worked out, I just hope it gets done before the year is up!

"Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger. These requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans.Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote by the Commission provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements which go into effect on February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things. Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements. The decision by the Commission gives the staff more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted. The stay will remain in effect until February 10, 2010, at which time a Commission vote will be taken to terminate the stay."

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. To the Lover of All Things Handmade:Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

How To Make a Ribbon Pouch

Ribbon Pouch Tutorial

Here is something you can do with all that beautiful wired ribbon! Make a pouch to put little treasures or favors in!

The following instructions will show you how to make a sheer ribbon pouch that measures approximately 2.5” x 2.5”. Perfect size for clippies! Use different sized ribbon and different lengths to get various sizes of pouches.

Supplies:
 2.5” Sheer Wired Ribbon
 Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
 Waxed Paper
 Ruler
 Scissors (NOT your best fabric cutting scissors!)

Step 1: Set up your work area by placing a sheet of waxed paper down on your work surface, and tear off an extra piece as shown. If using something other than sheer ribbon, the waxed paper may be unnecessary.

Step 2: Measure 6.5” from the end of the ribbon and cut.

Step 3: Measure approximately .25” from the cut edge and fold the ribbon, crease, then open back up slightly. Using your hot glue gun put a bead of glue along the edge. Immediately replace fold and using the scrap of waxed paper press the fold to seal the glue. Quickly remove the waxed paper from the top and from your work surface if using sheer ribbon before the glue cools completely. Otherwise you’ll be peeling paper off of your pouch! Repeat on other end, folding both to the same side.

Your ribbon will now measure approximately 6”.

Step 4: Measure 2.5” from one end and fold/crease.

Place a bead of hot glue along the short wired edge and press together. Repeat on other side.

Step 5: Fold the end that is extending over to make the flap covering the opening.

Place any small treasure into the pouch, perfect for gift giving! The sample pouch made in these instructions is just the right size for clippies! You can even make it a little longer to accommodate a business card!

This is going to seriously change my business. While I agree that there needs to be some regulation, and that the safety of our children is of the upmost importance, I am very upset. I enjoy making items for children, but will not be able to afford to comply to the testing regulations, nor the penalties if caught not complying completely to this law. I believe it is overkill. I have been asked time and time again for my "secret" method for making no slip grips. I've been very protective of it until now, I am offering it to you all now in a PDF that is 11 pages of easy to read text with 20 clear pictures to show you every step of the way! I tell you what supplies I use, and various methods I use to make the grips!

When making this tutorial I did an experiment. The first picture below was taken in the morning before school (the model has very fine slippery hair), then she came home at 3:30, played outside with some friends (running around, cartwheels, and tree climbing). All this time I did not touch her hair or bow, and neither did she. At dinner time her hair was a wreck (as you can imagine after all that play), but as you can see in the second picture, the bow is still almost in the same place 8 hours later!!! All other no slip grips I have tried never held in her hair through that much abuse!

I am so proud of this piece! It is a cornucopia, it measures only 2 inches! I got the idea right after I'd woken up one morning and couldn't get it out of my head until it was done. It took a long time and lots of fiddling, scraps of ribbon, sticky gluey hands, and a burned finger to get it how I wanted it. When I was done I couldn't decide if it was worth it or not. But now that it is sold, packaged, and shipped, I kind of miss it. Trying to decide if I should make another???

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your shop.

My name is Leslie Gidden, I am 36 years old, and I live in a beautiful small town south of St. Louis Missouri. I am married and have a wonderful 3 ½ year old daughter Madelyn. My husband and I will be celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary this October 11th. The month of September brings us to our first year in our new house here in Farmington. I am a part-time registered nurse working for a local pharmacy as a Community Education Nurse during the day. I talk too much, laugh too loud. I love to read…..ANYTHING! I love my family more than anything else in this world. I miss my Step-father and Mother-in-law every day, so much I physically hurt. I have a very strange sense of humor……not everyone gets it. I always fight for the underdog. I am a member of the Kids with Food Allergies support group. I LOVE helping others. I am a very caring and compassionate person…..so much so that little daily tragedies that happen elsewhere and are even out of my control will set me into crying jags. I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs………I am SO boring! More importantly, in 1999 I went to visit my father for a holiday during nursing school and it was then that my father introduced me to jewelry making and design. Yes….my father! The Christmas after my daughter was born I made jewelry as gifts for about every female on my list. This came out of necessity as I was now a stay-at-home-mother, and we only had one income coming in….all with a new baby. That Christmas was how it all started. You know how it goes….someone sees the jewelry, they refer them to you and voila……a business is born. .

2. How did you come up with the name of your shop?

From the minute our daughter was born it was pretty evident that she had 2 very distinctive sides to her. She is truthfully, for the most part, very very sweet. But on occasion the “other side” comes out. We call that person Mad Maggie. Her full name is Madelyn Margaret……hence the Mad Maggie. I searched, and brainstormed, asked advice, but the naming of my business kept coming back to Mad Maggie. It just fit seeing as that first Christmas I made jewelry was how this all started and I made the jewelry to stay at home with her…….1+1+1 and all that! It just came full circle around to her…….my Mad Maggie. Why I picked the “evil side” of my daughter I do not know. I guess I could have named it Madelyn Designs……but, I am sure this is a whole Dr. Phil episode in itself.

3. What is your favorite item in your shop?

Oh my gosh, THIS is a hard question. My biggest seller is the family jewelry, but I LOVE working with sterling wire. I love my Mother’s Rings because they were conceived for our local health department who commissioned me to make a piece of jewelry for their new Breastfeeding Clinic. All of the mothers who “graduate” a year with the clinic get a Mother’s Ring……I just LOVE that! I love being in Wal-Mart and seeing someone with my ring on. But, with that being said, I think I am going to have to say my all time favorite is the Sterling Wire earrings……any style. I just love the organic feel and look. I love making them. I love that there are never two the same. Plus I like anything that you can throw on and wear daily!

4. What is your favorite material to work with?

The Sterling Silver Wire, 0.925…..which is so aggravating to love a medium that steadily goes up in price EVERY DAY! I do think I found a new love though…..Brass. I have always loved my mother’s vintage jewelry that I used to play dress up with. The Brass reminds me of that fun time, so you might start seeing a collection of Brass jewelry soon, named for my mother’s side of the family. The Kelly Collection…….we are so Irish Catholic!

5. What is your inspiration?

Truthfully….my daughter. But, jewelry inspiration comes from many places. The Sundance Jewelry Collections, J Jill Jewelry, Acacia, color, other artists…..daily LIFE! Everything I see, people who I come in contact with. For example, my Katie Collection. This came from meeting a friend/co-workers daughter named Katie. She is such a joy and a truly nice teenage young lady! I just saw “candy” in my head whenever I was around her! She has this beautiful smile with those cute braces on her teeth…..it just took off in my head from there! 6. What future plans do you have for MadMaggieDesigns? I would LOVE to be a featured artist on Etsy…..heck I would love to be in a Treasury on the front page. But, with jewelry design, it is a hard road. It is so saturated with sellers. I am still waiting for that BIG IDEA or design to come to me. I want a design that I can create and is so unique that if you ever saw someone wearing it you could say, “Hey, that’s a Mad Maggie’s isn’t it?”. Oh, but wouldn’t it be fun to see Mad Maggie Designs in a retail department store? Before nursing school I worked in the jewelry department of Dillards Department Store in Oklahoma City. I would just SO LOVE to see all of my designs right there next to Anne Klein, Kenneth Cole, Anna and Ava, Adrienne Vittadini, and Napier………*sigh* A girl can dream can’t she?

First Day of Kindergarten!

I can't believe I just put my baby girl on a bus for her first day of Kindergarten! Feels like just yesterday she was a baby! Where does the time fly to??

Day Out With Thomas!

Thomas the Tank Engine came to our area last weekend so I got tickets to take the kids. I had taken Punky when she was 2, so now that Munky is 2, I thought he should get a chance to go too! When I had taken Punky, I had sewn a dress just for the occasion. Wow, I can't believe how much she has grown since then!

This year, since my sewing machine is put away to make room at the dinner table for Munky, I wanted to make a hair bow for the outing! Being too lazy to come up with a ribbon sculpture, I enlisted the help of my online friend Shannon from GHButterflies, she makes some awesome images! I asked her to make some bottle caps for a bow center as well as a bottle cap necklace for Munky! She did a fantastic job!!! I once thought about making my own bottlecaps, but for now, I think if I need some I'll just order from her, it was too easy!

I had intended on making a pigtail set for Punky, but a few days before I made the bows she said she didn't want to wear pigtails, just one ponytail. So I made a bow to wear on her ponytail. I have one bottle cap left over, trying to decide what to do with it now!

Curly hair for a day!

Hair set tutorial! Make your straight hair curly!

Not everyone is lucky enough to have beautiful wavy or curly hair. But those of us with straight hair have an option to have curly or wavy hair for a day! This set turns out really cute on little girls for a dressy occasion and looks best adorned with your favorite Punky N Munky hair accessory!

Collect your supplies:

Hair product that is appropriate for your hair type
A comb
A bunch of knit ponytail holders

Place the hair product on clean towel dried hair and comb through to evenly distribute. If the hair is very thick, let the hair dry to just slightly damp before continuing.

Next we’re going to make sections in the hair. Triangles, diamonds, squares, and rectangles all work well. The smaller the sections, the tighter the curl will be. You will want to experiment for what works best for the hair you are working with. I will show you what works on my model.

Using the tip of the comb, make a triangular section from the corner of the eyebrows to the center top. Allowing your model to make silly faces in the mirror can help lighten the mood :)

Comb the section of hair straight out from the head and then start twisting, either clockwise or counterclockwise, it’s up to you. My model thought it would help if she pointed 

Continue twisting all the way to the ends

Place one hand just a few inches from the scalp and lower the hair toward the scalp, the hair should twist on itself as shown, you may need to direct the hair in place.

Wrap the tail around the base directing it underneath the previous coil of hair, closer to the scalp.

Continue wrapping the tail around the base making sure each coil goes underneath the previous one. Make sure to tuck the ends in at the bottom.

Place one ponytail holder over the knot and wrap around the base to hold the ends in.

Make the next section from the tip of the triangle of the previous section to the ear. If the hair is thick, you may want to make this into two sections. My model has fine thin hair.

Repeat the steps for twisting the hair and securing the knot.

Make the same section on the other side of the head and repeat

Create your next section in the center behind the previous sections. I used diagonal partings resembling a V. Make and secure the hair knot.

Your next section will be from the bottom/tip of the previous triangle to behind the ear on both sides.

After you’ve done both sides, make another V in the center and place your knot.

You will have 2 sections left

Make and secure your last knots

Here is what it will all look like

Tuck your model into bed and let the hair dry overnight

Check on her in a little while and make sure she is sleeping soundly, give her a little kiss…

In the morning remove the ponytail holders, feeding them breakfast at the same time can help with the attention span of young models!

Using your fingers, comb though the hair to undo the knots.

It will be very curly,

If you want to keep the curl tight for longer, style the hair and spray with a hairspray.

If you don’t spray it, the curl will loosen over time to more of a ringlet, which is what I like for my model

Again, you will need to experiment with how many and how big the sections will need to be for the texture and density of the hair you are using. Also keep in mind that the thicker the hair, the longer it will need to dry. An option is to set the hair after it is completely dry, just mist it lightly with water and liberally apply styling product. That should shorten the dry time. You can also help it along with a blow dryer (a diffuser attachment is very helpful!). If using heat to dry the hair, allow it to completely cool before releasing the knots.

Yay! I am so excited that Project Runway is back on Bravo!! I have not missed a season since I saw the first season in reruns! Anyway, I am even more thrilled this season because two of the Designers are Etsy sellers!!! Not that I know them or anything, but it's just kinda cool! One of them even won the first challenge! The designers are Leanne, her etsy shop is Leanimal. And the one who won the challenge is Kelli, her shop is AntiLabel.

Thank you for all the kind words. My grandma passed away last night very peacefully. I will be leaving this weekend and will be out of town til Wednesday or Thursday. I hope to get tons of new stuff listed in my shop when I get back and start my Christmas in July sale!!!! Can you believe I've been working on Christmas bows?

I've been busy with orders and life in general lately. I'm sorry I haven't updated much! I have plenty of voluteers for my previous post, and I will get working on that project soon! I promise! I will let you know if you've been chosen, it just might be a couple weeks or so. My first priority is my family, my grandmother had a massive stroke a few days ago and is in Hospice right now. I got to go see her this past weekend and we are praying that she can go to Heaven soon and be at peace. She lives out of state, so when I need to leave again I might put my Etsy shop inactive or just put a notice in my shop to let you all know that shipments and communications may be delayed slightly.

Anyway, I have so much to update with my plans for Punky N Munky. Keep an eye out!!

I made up this tutoral a couple years ago. I did not understand my camera so well then so the pics aren't the best and there aren't enough, but if you have some sewing knowledge, even a beginner should be able to do it, I was just starting out when I made it (I had some help from another sewer who talked me through it)! I was planning on redoing it, but never got around to it. I had promised one, so until I get to redo it, here it is!

Twirl Skirt

Here are the directions that I wrote up for making a twirl skirt. You can make these skirts any size, any length based on these directions.

*Measure your child’s waist. Example 20"

*Decide how long you'd like the skirt to be: 15"

*Decide how many tiers you would like: 3

*Divide your length by the tiers and add seam allowances:
15 divided by 3 = 5.
Example:
If using 5/8 seam allowance, add seam allowances of 5/8" remembering that the top piece you will need to add enough to allow for a casing for the elastic size you choose + the 5/8", so 5+ 5/8 + 1"= 6 and 5/8". On the middle piece it will be 5/8" on both top and bottom so you add 1 1/4". On the bottom, allow for whatever hem you like to do, I like to add 5/8" and do a narrow hem, so I've added 1 1/4.

*You will be cutting and/or piecing fabric into strips that are 1 1/2-2 times the width of the strip above it.
Example:
Waist size 20", top tier is 30-40" wide
Middle tier is 45-80"
Bottom tier is 67-120"
I usually round up my numbers depending on the fabric. You can add seam allowance to this too.

The cut strips

*I usually make the skirt starting at the bottom/longest strip. It seems to be easier than starting at the top. Sew the strip ends together right sides together. remember to press your seams. Mark the quarter marks to help ensure even gathering.

Hem the bottom.

Gather the top edge. I zig zag over fishing line, dental floss, or string to make the gathers. I prefer fishing line, but am using crochet cord so you can see it better. You can also do 2 lines of running stitches to gather, I find that a pain in the butt, but that is just my opinion ;)

Pin to bottom of next tier right sides together adjusting fullness and matching quarters.

Sew together,

press, trim, and finish your seam if desired. You can also topstitch if you want here.

Then repeat the gathering on the top. Matching the raw edges with the next strip and the quarter marks, adjust fullness, and sew.

Once you've sewn on the last strip that is your waist band, it is time to make the casing. Fold over the raw edge, press. Then fold over again leaving enough space for your elastic and edgestitch. Leave an opening to insert the elastic.

*Cut elastic to fit comfortably around waist, insert into casing sew ends together and close the opening. Adjust fullness on the elastic. Stitch at the sides to keep the fabric from moving around the elastic while worn (stitch in the ditch if you have side seams)

Here it is finished on my daughter (3yo at the time). It wasn't my best one, but she had picked out the fabrics and I made it quickly. Next time I'd cut the squares shorter so it looked more patchwork like.

Here is another one, Punky was about 2.5

and another for fall. See how you can get creative with the size and lengths of your strips?

Also, if you want to add it to a tshirt, don't make the casing. Cut your tshirt allowing for the seam allowance. Gather the top of the skirt, match the raw edges and adjust the fullness. Sew using a BALL POINT needle using a stretch stitch. Either a narrow zigzag or if you have it on your machine, it looks like this stitch number 2 on my machine.

Spikey Bows

I've got a new bow I've loved making! I'm calling them a "Spikey Bow". Cool thing about them is that they could even get wet and not worry about loosing shape! Just air dry and rearrange as needed! I made a mini spikey bow for pigtails, but only finished one matching Punky's dress for her preschool graduation. I thought it looked cute as a single too! And just for fun, I included a picture of Punky at her Preschool Graduation Ceremony. How cute does she look in that hat??? :)

Puttin' On The Glitz

One is plain, made without a no slip grip.

Another one is made with a clear silicone lining applied, perfect for all hair types! Really keeps them from sliding and helps them stay put!!

The last one is lined with a thicker foam rubber that is perfect for that super thin barely there hair. It acts as kind of a "filler" to help it stay in place.

All ends are sealed to prevent fraying. They measure 1 3/4".

I just received my order from Jennifer from Bailygirlsboutique! I ordered some I Spy bags for Punky and Munky for their birthday. I opened up the package last night and couldn't wait for them to go to bed to open it up! They are darling!!! Very well made! My husband and I sat on the couch and played with them for awhile before I wrapped them back up to be hidden away til their party June 1. Seems a long time to wait, hope I don't give in and give it to them early!

No Slip Grip

I've been doing some experimenting with different "no slip grip" methods for my items that come on an alligator clip. I have tried several different things and came up with 2 that seem to work the best. So here is at I have to offer :)

1. A line of silicone. Although this one is the most labor intensive and time consuming, it is by far my favorite. It stays put! It would be the best option for all hair types. Even fine hair! (don't be fooled, I've seen some lined with some hot glue, I tried it, it doesn't work well!!)

2. If the hair is super thin as well as fine, and you'd prefer a thicker no slip grip, I can apply a foam rubber strip. It acts more as a "filler" for that thin barely there hair.

Most of my items with an alligator clip will come standard with a silicone no slip grip. I can always add the foam rubber liner if you prefer that option instead! Or if you prefer none at all, I can do that most of the time too! Please read each listing to see what is offered for that item. I am so excited to feature my first Etsy Seller!! I've been admiring Deb's work for awhile now on a website I like to visit and was very excited to see her open up shop on Etsy! Generations Tie Dye is the name of her shop, and can be found here. I would like to introduce her to you through a short interview I had with her. Take a look at her shop for more fabulous items too! Hope you enjoy!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a musician and music teacher by trade, taught instrumental music in public schools literally until I was in labor with my first, and now I'm a "professional mom" of two energetic girls. I also teach preschool music classes a couple mornings a week and clarinet lessons at home and occasionally volunteer in my older daughter's school.

2. How did you come up with the name of your shop?
I'd been asked to start teaching Music Together in a nearby town and I began filling out an application and needed a name for my Music Together business, and "Generations" is the name I came up with for it. Turns out that I never heard back from the people who wanted me to teach the class, but I liked the name better than anything else I'd come up with for my tie-dye business, so rather than let the name go to waste, here it is on Etsy.

3. What is your favorite item in your shop?
I go back and forth on a "favorite;" sometimes it's "MaterniTEE," sometimes it's anything pink, sometimes it's some of my older things like "Desert Sun" or something different like "Re Dress." I sort of wish I could mix up the order of things in the shop depending on my mood.

4. What’s the first item you remember tie dying?
I remember doing some cute baby stuff for friends who were having babies a few years back. It was kind of fun playing with different colors and designs.

5. What is your inspiration?
I'd have to say that the majority of what passes for inspiration is actually an insane creative drive. Whenever I see plain white cotton clothes my mind automatically starts wondering how to get this or that color combination or pattern, and now I'm playing with denim.

6. What future plans do you have for Generation Tie Dye?
Right now I'm just waiting to see where it takes me and planning to go from there. I just finished a custom order and getting started on another one or two, so that might be one direction to go. I'm also hoping at some point to combine tie-dyeing with clothing recycling and actually use dyed clothes or fabric to make completely new garments or decorating accessories like curtains, pillows, bed linens - sheets and pillowcases - or quilts. Ask me again in 6 months and see where it's gone and where it's headed - might be an entirely different answer by then. :-)

Off Topic ~ Do YOU know CPR?

I just had one of the biggest scares in my life tonight!! My husband, our 2 kids, and I went out to dinner. We were happily eating our appetizer when I looked over at Punky (almost 5yo) and she had a strange look on her face, she turned to me and her face was all red and her mouth was open but no breathing or talking! I asked if she was choking and she could not answer me! I yelled at dh that she was choking and yanked her out of the booth, at this point she was limp. My husband grabbed her and did the hymlich (sp?) it took three thrusts before the chunk of chicken flew out followed by the contents of her stomach! She started breathing and then crying, the best sound I've ever heard! I just hugged her there in the middle of TGIFridays bawling my eyes out! I'm crying now thinking about it! 5 minutes later she was totally fine, eating her meal and acting like her goofy self, I was/am still shaking!

Thankfully my husband takes CPR classes a couple times a year (he works in the saftey and environmental department of his company) and knows what to do. I know how to do it, but it's been years since I've had a refresher. I'm going to sign up for one asap.

If you have not taken a class, do so before it is too late! Go hug your children!

An Etsy Purchase

I've been meaning to post about this forever, but kept forgetting to get a picture!! I have been forever wanting a key fob like that one. I researched a bit and found where I could purchase the supplies to make my own. But after thinking about it, I just wasn't interested in making them. So I searched to buy one. I had a hard time finding one with purple (my favorite color). Etsy had just started the Alchemy section so I thought I'd make a request of one. I got a lot of bids. It was kind of a confusing process, and I'm not sure I'd go through it again unless I REALLY wanted an item I could not find. But anyway, I got a bid from another bow maker at MyRibbonFix. She already had one in her shop that I had missed during my searches. So I bought it, and I LOVE it!!! She also has the most adorable ribbon wands!

My overall experience with Alchemy was a good one, but I think next time I will just use the "request a custom item" feature in a sellers shop. If I ever do it, I'll let you know how it works out!

Easter!

For Easter this year, I made my niece a nylon interchangeable headband and a bow to match her dress. How adorable is she????

For Punky, I made a bow with a triple scoop icecream cone to match her dress from the "Ice Cream Social Line" from Gymboree. I normally don't splurge on their clothing like that. But this dress is made from jersy knit, so I knew she would wear it without complaining. She'll get a ton of use from it!!

For the heck of it, here is Punky and Munky in a rare moment of them sitting together.

I think I posted this bow before, I sold the first one I made and my sister wanted it for her oldest, my other adorable niece, so I made a new one!

Sock Bun Tutorial

Not enough hair for a pretty bun? Here is an easy way to get a nice full looking bun that is great for ballet class or just for fun! Hair should be about shoulder length or longer. Fine, medium, or coarse works, as does thin, medium, or thick.

Please note that the model here is a 4.5 year old that does not like to have her hair done so it was done super quick right before dance class. For a recital or dressy occasion, I would suggest using some hair products to smooth the hair, and possibly some kind of treat to occupy an unwilling participant :)

Get a crew or athletic type sock that you will not be using anymore and scissors. For a child, a child size sock works best. If you have very fine or thin hair, you may want to find a sock that is close to your color of hair or dye it. Could also use some of an old pair of pantyhose to cover it. Also needed is a few ponytail holders (not pictured)

Cut off the toe and discard

starting at the toe end, roll up the sock to resemble a donut.

Pull hair into a ponytail and secure.

Place the ponytail through the rolled up sock

distribute the hair to cover the sock

place a ponytail holder over the sock and secure

wrap any excess hair around the base and secure with either bobby pins or another ponytail holder. Decorate with your favorite Punky N Munky hair accessory if desired :)
